Princess Kate joined the royal family en masse at the Commonwealth Day service on March 9, where she rocked a striking blue ensemble and a set of stunning and meaningful earrings.

But it wasn’t just Princess Kate’s appearance that turned heads….

Kate Middleton stuns in blue and a set of heirloom earrings

The Princess of Wales looked undeniably elegant in rich, royal blue on Monday.

She joined other members of the royal family at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, which brought together the 56 nations that make up the Commonwealth.

The ceremony is held on the second Monday in March each year.

Unsurprisingly, Princess Kate looked divine in a navy blue Catherine Walker coatdress. She paired the look with a matching hat.

Notably, Princess Kate fulfilled expectations of wearing a piece with a special nod to another special member of The Firm.

Princess Kate wore a pair of Queen Elizabeth’s diamond and pearl earrings, known as the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings.

As per The Court Jeweller, these pearl and diamond jewels carry a special sentiment.

They detailed: “In November 1947, Princess Elizabeth of the United Kingdom married Lt. Philip Mountbatten. The princess received a haul of royal jewels as wedding gifts. Among them was a cache of seven pearls, presented in a shell, a gift from the Hakim of Bahrain. At some point shortly after the royal wedding, two of the Bahraini pearls were used to make a new pair of earrings. The earrings feature round diamond studs, from which are suspended round- and baguette-cut diamonds in an arrangement typical of the late 1940s. The pearls are used as drops on the earrings.”

The late queen was known to often wear the earrings for gala occasions and official portraits.

Meaning behind Princess Kate Middleton’s beautiful pearl and diamond earrings

Elsewhere, the publication also explains that Princess Diana has been known to have also worn the earrings.

“In 1982, the Queen loaned them to the Princess of Wales. Diana wore the earrings with other royal jewels, including her large sapphire and diamond cluster brooch, Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara, and the Queen’s Japanese Pearl Choker Necklace, for a banquet at Hampton Court Palace during a state visit from Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus of the Netherlands.”

This heartfelt tribute comes after it was predicted that Kate would honour both Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana at the Commonwealth Day Service.

Tobias Kormind, Managing Director of Europe’s largest online diamond jeweller 77 Diamonds, said of Princess Kate’s tendency to style herself with symbolic meaning in mind: “At the Commonwealth Day Service, the Princess of Wales is likely to continue her tradition of wearing jewellery linked to both her late mother‑in‑law and Queen Elizabeth II, a particularly meaningful choice as the nation marks the late Queen’s centenary next month.”

Princess Kate caught on camera in rare, candid moment

After arriving at the ceremony and once situated within Westminster Abbey, Princess Kate was caught on camera in a widely circulated clip going viral on social media – for all the right reasons.

The Princess of Wales was filmed sharing a glimpse of beloved, kind and thoughtful side, as she attempted to communicate with longtime royal photographer Arthur Edwards.

Edwards looked to be shooting footage of Kate in the clip, documenting the moment the princess noticed him.

Arthur Edwards has been photographing the royal family for 50 years. Evidently, he was a familiar face to Princess Kate.

She could be seen across the room, smiling and mouthing, “Hello,” toward Arthur. How sweet!

Queen Camilla wears glittering brooch at Commonwealth Day service

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla also wore an eye-catching piece as she stepped out on Monday.

The queen wore the Queen Mother’s Cartier Diamond Palm Leaf Brooch.

Evidently, standing out was The Firm’s priority today as they stepped out in force. Queen Camilla also choice a strong colour, opting for a red coatdress ensemble and matching hat.

The Court Jeweller explains that Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, commissioned Cartier to make the stunning, leaf-shaped brooch in 1938, using existing diamonds from her personal collection.

The shape is reminiscent of a paisley pattern, which is a motif associated with the Queen Mother’s original home of Scotland.

She famously wore it at the funeral of her husband, King George VI, in February 1952.

Upon her death in 2002, the brooch was handed down and loved by her daughter, the late Queen Elizabeth.

Commonwealth Day key moments explained

Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of CasinoHawks former royal butler Grant Harrold has unravelled all the key moments of the The Firm’s big day – from Queen Camilla appearing to get “carried away,” and one royals apparent, momentary blunder.

Get comfy, as Harrold explained every moment…

Chatting through the day, he said: “When they arrive, we see Princess Anne, Sir Timothy, Prince William and Kate chatting which is really nice. They all get on really well and close behind closed doors. They don’t get to see each other that often, which is why Commonwealth Day is such a nice day for them all. They don’t have to bow or curtsy because they are all the same rank – they are all equal. So they just kiss and hug instead. It’s lovely seeing them share this family moment, even in such a public setting.”

Princess Anne’s etiquette ‘blunder’?

Princess Anne, despite being well versed in everything royal, may have raised eyebrows during one fleeting moment during the ceremony. The princess was said to have offered a curtsy a little bit too late.

“According to royal etiquette, royal ladies always kiss on the cheek before they curtsy. It’s an interesting royal fact and it does cause some confusion, as people sometimes think they’ve forgotten to curtsy – which isn’t the case,” the former butler detailed.

How King Charles managed Queen Camilla getting ‘carried away’

“We also see Charles hurrying Camilla up and telling her to get into her position, which is quite common. Camilla likes to chitchat and knows a lot of people, and she can get a bit carried away. She would never want to be rude and genuinely wants to greet people. But at events like this, the King is very aware of the time and knows they need to stay right on time. You often see him guiding her back to their place, which I think is really nice – and quite relatable for most couples!”

Elsewhere, Duchess Sophie and Prince Edward didn’t show their faces…

King Charles’s relaxed approach

“The late Queen was very strict with Commonwealth Day, and there was very much a three line whip on that. But it seems that King Charles is a bit more relaxed on that front, and is happy for his family to prioritise their other work. It would obviously be different if it was for a private holiday or something, but he’s happy for them to put other key royal commitments and duties first.”

The royals put on a united front on Monday despite the ongoing scrutiny stacking against The Firm, as they stepped out for their first official royal calendar fixture of 2026.
