What happens during a royal state visit?
During a state visit, there is traditionally a ceremonial welcome, which usually takes place on Horse Guards Parade in London.
The guests are invited to inspect a Guard of Honour before travelling to Buckingham Palace or another royal residence in a carriage procession.
Usually on the evening of the first day of the state visit, the visitors are honoured with a state banquet, hosted by the king.
For years, this was traditionally held at Buckingham Palace. But, as the palace undergoes renovations, the recent state banquets have taken place at Windsor Castle.

Around 150 guests usually attend the state banquet. They typically receive invites on the basis of their cultural, diplomatic of economic links to the country being hosted.
During the banquet, King Charles delivers a speech and proposes a toast.
Usually, for the remainder of the state visit, the guests will meet the British Prime Minister, Government ministers and leaders of the main political parties.
