Kate Middleton's true feelings about following royal tradition after birth of Prince George which pregnant Meghan Markle 'chose against'

"I'm not going to lie"

Kate Middleton once opened up about how she really felt posing for photos outside hospital after giving birth to her son Prince George, something her sister-in-law Meghan Markle chose against when she was pregnant.

For all three of her children, the Princess of Wales stepped out onto the steps of St Mary’s Hospital hours after giving birth to pose for photographers.

She echoed her late mother-in-law Princess Diana, who did the same with her sons Prince William and Prince Harry in the ’80s.

But, Kate previously admitted following the tradition was “terrifying”.

Kate Middleton on posing outside hospital after giving birth

On July 22, 2013, Kate gave birth to her and Prince William’s first child, son Prince George.

Hours after George’s birth, William and Kate emerged from the hospital’s Lindo Wing to introduce newborn George to the world.

Kate looked radiant as she wore a light blue polka dot dress and cradled baby George in her arms. Prince William stood proudly next to them, supporting his wife.

But behind the scenes, it seems Kate wasn’t as calm as she appeared in front of photographers.

Years later in 2020, Kate appeared on Giovanna Fletcher’s podcast Happy Mum, Happy Baby.

Speaking about the moment, Kate admitted: “It was slightly terrifying, I’m not going to lie.”

But she continued: “Everyone had been so supportive and both William and I were really conscious this was something that everyone was excited about and we were hugely grateful for the support that the public has shown us.

“For us to be able to share that joy and appreciation with the public I felt was really important. But equally it was coupled with a newborn baby and inexperienced parents and the uncertainty about what that held so there were all sorts of mixed emotions.”

Why Meghan Markle didn’t pose on hospital steps

When it came to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, they didn’t follow in William and Kate’s footsteps when they welcomed their son, Archie.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed Archie on May 6, 2019.

But, they did things differently when it came to introducing Archie to the world.

Instead of a hospital steps photocall, they introduced Archie to the world a couple of days after his birth in a photocall at Windsor Castle on May 8.

It was slightly terrifying, I’m not going to lie.

Speaking in their 2022 Netflix series, Harry & Meghan, the couple discussed their decision.

Meghan explained: “There was already the pressure of the picture with Archie on the steps, and ‘Are they gonna do that, are they not?’

“But I had been really worried going into that labour because I’m older and I didn’t know if I’d have to have a C-section. And I had a very long-standing relationship with my doctor and that’s who I trusted with my pregnancy.”

‘The amount of abuse that we got was incredible’

Meghan continued: “And [the palace] said, ‘Right, but she’s at Portland Hospital and the steps are at this hospital.’ I said, ‘OK, we could do a photo call in front of Portland Hospital.’

“And they said, ‘It’s impossible. We couldn’t barricade these streets off, and it would create a threat for the emergency room entrance, because that’s where you would have to do this picture.’

“We said, ‘OK, what’s the hybrid? Can we give them more time at the castle?’ And everything in turn was like, ‘Yes. Yes, great. Oh, yes.’ At no point did someone go, ‘Absolutely not.'”

Harry added: “The amount of abuse that we got, especially [Meghan], but both of us, for not wanting to serve our child up on a silver platter, was incredible.”

The couple are also parents to their daughter Lilibet, who was born in June 2021.
