As King Charles gets ready for his US state visit later this month, President Donald Trump has made a comment about the monarch amid the ongoing Iran war.

Earlier this week, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the king and queen will head to the United States in April for a visit to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American Independence this year.

The announcement came amid some calls for the trip to be postponed or cancelled as the Middle East conflict continues.

President Trump later spoke out, saying he looks “forward to spending time with the king, whom I greatly respect”. Trump added that the state visit will be “terrific”.

Now, he’s made a suggestion about King Charles in an apparent dig at UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Donald Trump makes suggestion about King Charles ahead of US state visit

Trump has criticised Starmer in recent weeks after the PM didn’t allow the US to use British bases to attack Iran.

Since then, Trump has made several comments about Starmer. He admitted he was “disappointed” in the PM for not providing more support for his war with Iran.

In response, Starmer told MPs in March: “President Trump has expressed his disagreement with our decision not to get involved in the initial strikes, but it is my duty to judge what is in Britain’s national interest.”

Now, Trump has made another apparent dig at Starmer and has dragged the king into the drama.

When asked about King Charles by The Telegraph, Trump said: “I like him. I always liked him as a prince. He’s a good man, a great representative for your country.

“I think he would have taken a very different stand [on the war in Iran] but he doesn’t do that. I mean, he’s a great gentleman.”

A Buckingham Palace source has since said: “His Majesty The King is above Politics.”

Trump’s close relationship with King Charles

Trump has always been very complimentary of the royal family over the years. He previously made gushing comments about the late Queen Elizabeth II, even claiming he “was her favourite president”.

Last September, Trump visited the UK for a historic second state visit. He was invited by the king to visit Britain with his wife, US First Lady Melania Trump.

He’s a good man, a great representative for your country.

They were hosted at Windsor Castle and enjoyed a state banquet during the trip. After the state visit, Trump gushed over the king.

He said on social media: “It was great being with King Charles, Queen Camilla, and the royal family!”

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Trump confirmed King Charles’ US visit before the palace’s announcement.

He said: “I do look forward to seeing the king. He’s going to be coming, as you know, very shortly.”
