The royal family line of succession has years of history behind it and since King Charles III became the British monarch in 2022, there’s been some changes.

Following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September 2022, her eldest son Charles, 76, acceded the throne and his wife Camilla was made Queen Consort.

The current heir to the throne is William, Prince of Wales. His three children follow behind, in order of birth. Let’s take a look at the full line of succession below…

Royal line of succession

1. Prince of Wales

Prince William, who was previously the Duke of Cambridge, became the Prince of Wales when his father Charles became monarch.

As the eldest son of King Charles III and the late Princess Diana, William has spent his whole life training to be a future monarch.

As the current heir, William, 42, supports the king in his royal commitments as well as keeps up with his own royal work including the support of charities.

In addition, when William becomes king, his wife Kate, Princess of Wales, will become Queen Consort.

2. Prince George of Wales

As the eldest child of Prince William and Kate, Princess of Wales, Prince George is second in line to the throne.

George Alexander Louis was born in 2013. At the time of writing, he is currently 11 years old.

According to reports, William and Kate have slowly been prepping George for his future role as monarch.

As you’ve probably seen on a few occasions in the last few years, George has joined his parents for a handful of royal appearances – much to the delight of fans!

3. Princess Charlotte of Wales

Third in line to the British throne is Princess Charlotte of Wales – the Prince and Princess of Wales’ second child and only daughter.

Charlotte was born in May 2015 and is currently nine years old.

Just like her elder brother, Charlotte has attended many royal events including the late Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral in 2022. However, she wasted no time in making sure George followed protocol!

It’s clear she’ll become a great support to brother George when he becomes king one day.

4. Prince Louis of Wales

The youngest – and probably most mischievous – child of William and Kate, Prince Louis, is fourth in line to the throne.

However, as the youngest, Louis’ chances of becoming king one day are rather slim since his siblings will most likely take on the position before him.

Louis was born in April 2018, and is currently six years old.

5. The Duke of Sussex is still in the royal family line of succession

King Charles and Princess Diana’s second child, Prince Harry, is fifth in the line of succession.

However, his chances of becoming king are less likely as he’s foregone his royal duties in order to live a more financially independent life with his wife Meghan Markle.

Like his brother William, Harry, 40, has been a Counsellor of State since he turned 21 and stood in for the late queen on official duties.

A Counsellor of State is a royal authorised to carry out most of the official duties on behalf of the monarch.

6. Prince Archie of Sussex

Prince Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor is the first child of Prince Harry and Meghan. He was born in 2019, making him five years old, and is sixth in line of succession within the royal family.

Although he wasn’t made a prince at the time of his birth because he was the great-grandson of the queen, the honourable title was bestowed on him when Charles became the king.

7. Princess Lilibet of Sussex

Archie’s only sister and the youngest child of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex was born on June 4, 2021.

Princess Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was named after the late queen – whose nickname was Lilibet.

Like her brother Archie, Lilibet received the title of a princess when Charles acceded the throne.

Prince Andrew, 64, is the third child of the late queen and Prince Philip. He became the Duke of York upon marrying Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, in 1986.

However, Andrew stepped down from his royal duties 2019 after he became associated with the late convinced sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The younger brother of the king is eighth in line to the throne behind Prince Harry and his children.

Born in 1988, Princess Beatrice, 36, is the eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of York. She is also known as Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice.

Meanwhile, she will welcome her second child with her husband in early 2025.

10. Miss Sienna Mapelli Mozzi

Princess Beatrice’s first child with Edoardo, Sienna Mapelli Mozzi, was born in September 2021.

She’s 10th in line to the throne.

11. Miss Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi

Princess Beatrice’s second daughter Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi is 11th in line.

She was born on January 22, 2025. Due to Athena’s arrival, the line of succession shifted slightly as you can see below.

13. Master August Brooksbank

Born on February 9, 2021, Eugenie and Jack’s first child, August Brooksbank, is 13th in line to the throne.

14. Ernest Brooksbank

Meanwhile, Eugenie and Jack welcomed their second child, son Ernest, in May 2023. He is one year old.

Currently, Ernest is 14th in line to the throne.

15. The Duke of Edinburgh

As the youngest child of the late queen and Prince Philip, Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, is 15th in line to the throne.

After his eldest brother Charles became king, Edward, 60, was given the title of Duke of Edinburgh – once held by his father.

He was given the title on his 59th birthday in 2023. Edward’s previous title – Earl of Wessex – has now been passed to his son James.

James was born in 2007, meaning he’ll turn 17 in December 2024. Meanwhile, he became Earl of Wessex in 2023.

17. Lady Louise Windsor

The older sister of the Earl of Wessex, Lady Louise Windsor, was born in 2003. Currently, Louise, 21, is 17th in line to the throne behind her brother.

However, according to reports, she’s behind her little brother in the line of succession because she was born when the traditional system allowed a younger son to replace an older daughter. Consequently, she’s behind him in the line of succession.

Princess Anne is the only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and their second child after
King Charles III.

Born in London in 1950, she was given the title of Princess Royal in June 1987. She’s 18th in line to the throne.

In addition, Anne, 74, has often been given the unofficial title of the “hardest working royal” thanks to her incredible work ethic.

Neither of Princess Anne’s children – Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall – have royal titles. Although they are the children of a senior role, this was something Anne declined when they were born.

Peter, 47, is the eldest grandchild of the late queen. Meanwhile, he is 19th in the line of succession.

The sister of Peter, Zara Tindall, is 22nd in the line of succession.

Following in the footsteps of her mother, Zara made a name for herself as a successful equestrian, winning a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics.

Meanwhile, she also married England rugby player Mike Tindall in 2011.

Royal line of succession ends with Zara and Mike’s family

In 23rd, 24th and 25th place in the line of succession are Zara and Mike’s three children – Mia, Lena and Lucas Tindall – respectively.

Mia is the eldest, born in 2014. After that, Zara and Mike welcomed Lena in 2019 and then son Lucas in 2021.

However, it’s very unlikely they’ll ever become monarch.
