Queen Camilla son Tom Parker-Bowles reveals what kind of cook she was growing up
It seems while Camilla may have cooked for Tom in the past, it’s been a while since she has had to put her cooking skills to use.
Speaking about Camilla’s cooking skills, Tom said: “She is busy. But she was also busy bringing up two children in the 70’s and 80’s in Wiltshire. It wasn’t that my dad would cook, she was a good cook.”
But there was one thing Camilla didn’t do when cooking – follow all of the rules. It seems instead, she opted to just go with the flow and hoped that the dish would turn out nice.
Tom continued: “She was not a recipe follower. Get a chicken, put a lemon up his [bleep], you know. Put butter all over it and then put it in the oven. That was dinner.”
However, there seems to be one meal that Tom would love to have over and over again; Camilla’s roast chicken. For him, it’s one of his most memorable dishes from his childhood.
He admitted: “It would be [memorable childhood dish] my mum’s roast chicken. And then she would never make gravy. But she would cut off that fatty bit that hangs over.
“Then she would put it on the top and she would pour all of the juices over your chicken. It would be basically a baked potato. That was it.”

Tom’s happy memories
The happy childhood memories don’t stop there for Tom, as he seems to recall pleasant times at their local fish and chips shop.
He said: “The fish and chips shop was in our local town. So we would go to the video shop afterwards. But my mum told them I wasn’t allowed to get movies rated 18. But I would get movies like Lethal Weapon and Delta Force. And because it was before the Video Recordings Act they weren’t rated.
“But she would know all of this stuff. And then we would have fish, chips and a video. It was just like ‘This is the life’.”
Tom added his children have more of a say on the food they eat – not like his childhood with his sister.
He added: “We didn’t have a choice growing up. My kids say ‘ooh I don’t feel like that’. No, that was it, you had lunch or dinner and that was it.”
Tom’s love for food doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone as he has made a career from being a food writer and critic. In 2010 he won the Guild of Food Writers award for his words on British food.
He grew up with his sister, Laura, alongside his mum Camilla and his dad Andrew Parker-Bowles, Camilla’s first husband.
