Donald Trump has revealed the planned date for his state visit to the UK, as he called King Charles his ‘friend’.

The President of the United States was invited to return to Britain on an official visit by the king back in February.

The monarch had penned a letter, and tasked Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer with delivering the invitation overseas.

Donald Trump has ‘great respect’ for King Charles

78-year-old Donald Trump said he is expecting to travel across the pond to the UK in September for his second state visit.

King Charles will host the president and first lady Melania Trump on their trip. Windsor Castle is expected to be the setting of the meeting.

It’s also understood Trump has discussed his visit with the Prime Minister on the phone.

“I was invited by the king and the country – great country,” he told reporters in the Oval Office.

“They’re going to do a second, as you know, a second fest … that’s what it is: a fest, and it’s beautiful, and it’s the first time it’s ever happened to one person.

“And the reason is we have two separate terms, and it’s an honour … I’m a friend of Charles, I have great respect for King Charles and the family, William, we have really just a great respect for the family.

“And I think they’re setting a date for September.”

Monarch invited Donald Trump to stay at royal household during state visit

In February, King Charles personally invited Donald Trump and his wife to stay at a royal residence. It was either Balmoral or Dumfries House based in Scotland, near his favourite golf resorts.

Traditionally, US presidents who are in their second term in office are not offered another state visit – but Donald Trump was.

But His Majesty invited the former TV star for tea or lunch at Windsor Castle.

Trump made the revelation on Thursday, suggesting Buckingham Palace was “setting a date” for his next trip to take place in September.

Previous presidents who have been invited to tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle include George W Bush and Barack Obama.

Trump’s first visit as head of state was when the late Queen Elizabeth II hosted the president in 2019.

In the letter, which Trump showed to cameras at the time but only parts of it could be seen, it read: “I can only say that it would be … pleasure to extend that invitation once again, in the hope that you … some stage be visiting Turnberry and a detour to a relatively near neighbour might not cause you too much inconvenience. An alternative might perhaps be for you to visit Balmoral.

“There is much on both estates which I think you might find interesting, and enjoy – particularly as my foundation at Dumfries House provides hospitality skills-training for young people who often end up as staff on your own establishments!”

It continued: “Quite apart from this presenting an opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues of mutual interest, it would also offer a valuable chance to plan a historic second state visit to the United Kingdom.

“As you will know this is unprecedented by a US President. That is why I would find it helpful for us to be able to discuss, together, a range of options for location and programme content.

“In so doing, working together, I know we will further enhance the special relationship between our two countries of which we are both so proud.”

Declaring he ‘loved’ His Majesty

It comes after he previously admitted he was a big fan of the royal family. He even likened the idea of America joining the ‘Commonwealth of Nations’.

Reports last month claimed the King Charles is considering extending an offer of ‘associate membership’ to the United States, Donald Trump loved the idea.

The president responded to the headlines on his own social media platform, Truth Social.

At the time he wrote: “I love King Charles.” He added that the idea of the USA joining the Commonwealth “sounds good to me!”

However, it rubbed Americans up the wrong way. Many fans jumping to X (Twitter) to slam the idea.

Radio host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones even suggested it would cause another civil war on their home turf.
