The royals were seated beside war veterans and spoke to them throughout the procession. In one instance, we see Kate Middleton look through the veteran’s old photos which she shows Princess Charlotte and Prince George, making the VE Day that bit more extra special.

Later, through the live feed, we see Kate still in ‘mum mode’, as she and Charlotte exchange a few words. Princess Charlotte smiles, before Kate Middleton, without a second thought, swoops in to gently move the hair from over her shoulder and smiles back at her.

One fan called an interaction between the pair on the balcony as “just beautiful”. Another said Kate looked like a “proud mama” today as she beamed from ear to ear.

A third wrote: “Mama bear! The Princess of Wales with her arms around her children today.”

Following on from the balcony appearance, King Charles hosted a tea party for some of the last living war heroes of the Second World War and their families.

Prince George, who is second in line to the throne, joined his mother and father in meeting them.

Dad and son spoke to Royal Engineers veteran Alfred Littlefield who is 101-years-old and served during D-Day.

Prince William said how important it was to preserve veterans’ stories, and it was “very important” for his son George and the “next generation” to hear stories from those who fought in the war.

Before the procession, a palace aide had said: “The King, Queen and other members of The Royal Family are much looking forward to all the week’s VE Day events, when they will unite with the rest of the nation and those across the Commonwealth and wider world in celebrating, commemorating and giving thanks to the wartime generation whose selfless devotion duty and service should stand as an enduring example to us all – and must never be forgotten.”
