King Charles’ secret nickname for Queen Camilla

While their previous nicknames – inspired by characters from the BBC radio show, The Goon Show – have been known for a while, this is believed to be the first time we’ve heard King Charles refer to Queen Camilla with another pet name.

Last week, the couple were planting a Swedish oak tree in Windsor. They were joined by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden for the occasion.

When he was discussing where to put soil around the tree, the monarch revealed his moniker for his other half.

He said: “On this side, darling, this side…”

Why do Charles and Camilla call each other Fred and Gladys?

It’s believed Charles, the then Prince of Wales, was inspired by the radio comedy show, which ran between 1951 and 1960.

Despite it being known for several years, it’s also reported they do call each other these names still, in private, after all this time. It’s something that has stuck since they were in their 20s.

Princess Diana knew about the nicknames too, as Charles and Camilla were still seeing each other when he married the late Princess of Wales.

Ahead of the wedding, Lady Diana found a box tucked away in the Prince’s private secretary’s office. When she opened it, she found a gold bracelet engraved with the letters G and F – referring to Gladys and Fred.

Diana later said she still got married despite finding the gift.

Other adorable royal family nicknames

A lot of members from the royal family have adorable nicknames other than King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The late Queen Elizabeth II was called Lilibet, as she couldn’t pronounce her own name as a child. Her husband Prince Philip would call her ‘cabbag’ as well.

Although it’s a strange moniker, it could be from the French term ‘mon petit chou’, which means ‘my little cabbage’.

Although, King Charles’ nickname for Meghan Markle wasn’t as complimentary as the one for Queen Camilla!
