Meghan Markle and the Vogue cover drama

Back in 2022, Meghan and her friend, Edward Enninful, the former Vogue UK editor, came up with a plans for the September 2022 edition of the magazine.

The issue would have featured Meghan’s keynote appearance at the One Young World Summit in Manchester. It would have “involved extensive features across the magazine and its digital editions”.

At the time, it was reported that Meghan Markle wanted to be on the cover of Vogue UK. However, Enninful already had his cover star, fashion model Linda Evangelista.

This then allegedly led to Meghan pulling the plug on the deal.

However, it’s now been reported that scheduling wasn’t the only reason the shoot didn’t go ahead.

Duchess’ ‘shock demands’

Speaking to Page Six, a source has alleged that Meghan wanted to be on the cover of both the UK edition of the magazine, and the US edition. The Duchess of Sussex also reportedly had a long string of demands.

“Meghan asked for control over photographer, writer, final edit, photos, cover lines, and wanted a global issue,” a source has claimed.

It’s been claimed that there was “no way” an editor would agree.

“Nobody gets that. Not even Beyoncé,” the source added.

The source has also claimed that Meghan set up a Zoom call with Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour in a bid to pitch the idea.

The source claims that Wintour wasn’t interested, with Vogue US already having a cover star in the form of Serena Williams.

“Meghan asked for a Zoom with her to reconsider, and Anna did it to be polite,” the source added.

Meghan Markle and Vogue UK editor ‘no longer on speaking terms’

However, another source has claimed that Meghan never asked for the Vogue cover, and that the magazine had actually approached her several times since her marriage to Prince Harry.

Meghan had previously been asked by Enninful to appear on the cover of the Vogue UK 2019 “Forces for Change” issue. The duchess opted to guest edit the magazine instead.

A source recently alleged to the Daily Mail that Enninful and Meghan are no longer on speaking terms.

“The duchess and her team had high expectations and were expecting she might get a print cover or at least a digital cover out of it, but Enninful was not able to meet those expectations. He already had a magazine cover in the bag for that month,” the source said.

“Edward was furious to have lost the project, as were the powers that be at Condé Nast. The whole process became very difficult. Edward could only promise her a big showy feature inside the magazine and online — but she turned it down,” they added.

However, other sources have denied this, stating that Meghan and Edward’s relationship has “remained warm and respectful” since. They even reportedly exchange birthday wishes and presents.

Meghan did get her cover shoot in September 2022, appearing on the front of New York mag, The Cut.

She also appeared on the cover of Variety magazine in October 2022.

Royal Insider has contacted Meghan’s representatives for comment.
