Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s second date sparked a sweet tradition that’s now being passed down to Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

But now, nearly eight years after their love story began, their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are helping keep this tradition alive.

Prince Harry’s gesture to Meghan Markle on second date

On July 4, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex celebrated American Independence Day with their two children by revisiting the same sentimental gesture Harry made on their second date in 2016: a batch of homemade cupcakes.

“Our second date was the 4th of July 2016, and H brought me cupcakes to celebrate,” Meghan shared on Instagram. “Now, all these years later, our two children are in on the tradition.”

The carousel of photos posted on her personal account included a throwback selfie of the couple from that second date, as well as a new image of a tiny hand, likely Archie or Lilibet’s, holding a cupcake topped with red, white, and blue frosting.

“Happy Independence Day! May your day be as sweet as these cupcakes,” she captioned the post.

Harry first opened up about that meaningful date in his memoir Spare.

“She walked in, wearing a pretty blue sundress with white pinstripes. She was aglow,” he recalled. “I stood and said: I bear gifts. A pink box. I held it forward. She shook it. What’s this? She opened the box. Cupcakes. Red, white, and blue cupcakes, to be exact. In honour of Independence Day.

“I said something about the Brits having a very different view of Independence Day from the Yanks, but, oh, well.”

Now, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are sweetly continuing the tradition.

Meghan Markle celebrates July 4th

Meghan also shared behind-the-scenes moments of the family’s celebration on her lifestyle brand’s account, As Ever.

In a short video, the Duchess prepared a vibrant fruit and cheese board in the colours of the American flag.

The platter featured strawberries, blueberries, cherries, blackberries, watermelon wedges, and star-shaped slices of cheese, all arranged alongside fresh bread, breadsticks, and a generous dollop of her newly launched As Ever raspberry jam.

In true Meghan style, the display was finished with a flourish of edible flowers and fresh petals.

She captioned the post: “Red, white and blue… and easy to do! Happy 4th, friends. Be safe, have fun.”

To complement the summery treats, Meghan crafted a raspberry gin and tonic.

She muddled raspberries and garnished the drink with blueberries and mint from her California garden.

The clip ended with a candid shot of Meghan enjoying the cocktail and patriotic cheese board with a friend in the garden.

The fruit board will look familiar to fans of her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. In one episode, the Duchess crafted a similar rainbow-themed platter for a children’s birthday party.
