Old photo of Princess Diana ignites debate over her ‘natural’ hair colour
Princess Diana isn't a natural blonde!
Princess Diana has been a style, hair and beauty icon for decades, even beyond her tragic and untimely death in 1997.
The Princess of Wales became known for her iconic style moments like her “revenge dress”, her effortless but chic Lady Diana haircut and her trendy array of university sweatshirts and biker shorts.
Of course, one characteristic that was probably the most eye-catching about Diana, apart from her piercing blue eyes and dazzling smile, was her signature blonde locks, fluffed into a layered pixie cut.
However, a new debate surrounding Diana’s notable golden tresses has come to light.

Princess Diana’s iconic hair
There has been an argument over what colour Princess Diana’s hair naturally is.
Some fans say auburn, others bronze and some strawberry blonde.

One Reddit user recently wrote to the r/RoyalTea thread and stated that Diana wasn’t a redhead, like some suggest. They included a photo of a very young Diana, and her hair looks much darker.
They said: “She wasn’t a redhead as someone suggests, and neither blonde, she had auburn hair.
“That’s why in some photos her hair looks brown and in others so red. I think that she should have kept her natural hair, I prefer it way more than her blonde hair.”
Another Redditor penned: “Auburn is reddish brown. This is not that. Diana had strawberry blonde hair, naturally.”

Princess Diana’s natural hair colour debated
“I think Diana and I have a similar hair colour that I have never quite been able to label,” chimed in a third. “My hair is kind of a bronze-ish colour, a light blondish-brown with reddish undertones. I call it Neapolitan because it’s like a mix of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry!”

“William is the spitting image of Diana in that 3rd photo! Also, the 80s was tough on everyone’s hair,” added another alongside a string of photos shared by the original poster.
“TIL Diana didn’t have blonde hair,” detailed another, whilst another commented: “She had really dark blonde hair. The cameras developed highly discoloured in the past decades. She never had a warmish coloured root.”
The Lady Diana haircut
Diana’s iconic short bob, textured pixie cut blend came on a whim when hairstylist Sam McKnight cut Diana’s hair on a Vogue photo shoot in the early 90s.
Speaking about the iconic Lady Diana Haircut, he said: “When I met Diana, things were changing.

“We were moving on from the ’80s romantic frills and going much sleeker with short, sharp hair to wear with Chanel and Versace suits of the time. It was all about the power woman look.”

Daniel Galvin, another hairdresser who worked with Diana, told Hello Magazine in 2019 that he blended a customised blonde shade for Diana’s locks.
“Highlights were placed in such a way which gave her a natural, sun-kissed look. Diana’s eyes sparkled and stood out, and this was thanks to my bespoke blonde – as I always say, when you have the perfect hair colour, the first thing people should notice is their eyes.”
