Reason Prince William and Kate Middleton's new Windsor home move is 'sensible' decision
The couple and their children will make the move later this yearPrince William and Kate Middleton will move to a new home in Windsor later this year and the decision has been branded “sensible” by a royal commentator.
The Prince and Princess of Wales currently reside at Adelaide Cottage, located in the grounds of Windsor Home Park, with their three children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven.
But later this year, they’ll move to Forest Lodge, which boasts eight bedrooms, also located in Windsor Great Park. The move has been branded a “fresh start” for the family, who faced a tough 2024 due to Kate’s cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Windsor home move branded ‘sensible’
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has told Royal Insider that the family’s latest move is a “sensible move”. This is because their Adelaide Cottage, which has four bedrooms, is “too small for a family of five”.
Richard told us: “This is undoubtedly a sensible move as Adelaide Cottage was too small for a family of five, it is near Lambrook where all three children go to school, it is also near Catherine’s parents and her siblings who have been the unsung heroes of her health struggle.
“Adelaide Cottage is linked to this stressful time over the last eighteen months, a ‘brutal’ period, as William has said and a change is an excellent idea.”
Richard added: “However, although they intend Forest Lodge to be their permanent home and remain so when William becomes king, this most emphatically will not mean a diminution of the importance of Buckingham Palace, which is iconic, Windsor Castle, Balmoral and Sandringham.
“They all have an important part to play during different times in the year in the world’s most high-profile monarchy which is our premier source of soft power.”

Wales family set for ‘fresh start’ in new home
It won’t be long until William, Kate, and their kids will move into Forest Lodge. A Kensington Palace spokesperson confirmed: “The Wales family will move house later this year.”
The family had moved into the Grade II listed property Adelaide Cottage from Kensington Palace in the summer of 2022.
This is undoubtedly a sensible move as Adelaide Cottage was too small for a family of five.
However, sources say the family’s last year at the home has seen some “really difficult times”.
The insider told the BBC: “Windsor has become their home. However, over the last few years while they have lived at Adelaide Cottage there have been some really difficult times.
“Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter. It’s an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind.”

William and Kate’s ‘brutal’ 2024 after her cancer ordeal
Last year, the Princess of Wales announced her cancer diagnosis. She then took a step back from duties and focused on her treatment.
In January 2025, Kate announced she was in remission. But she’s continued to prioritise her health and gradually return to full-time duties this year.

Late last year, after Kate finished her treatment, William touched on the “brutal” year the family had endured. His father, King Charles, was also diagnosed with cancer. At the time of writing, the king is still undergoing treatment.
He told reporters during a trip to South Africa: “I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it’s been brutal.”
