Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis' 'uncertain' futures as Prince George prepares to be king
Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis may have the freedom to decide whether or not to pursue a future as working royals
The future roles of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are “uncertain” as the Prince and Princess of Wales prepare their eldest son, Prince George, for his eventual path to the throne.
According to new claims, royal aides suggest Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven, may ultimately have the freedom to choose between life as working royals or pursuing independent careers outside the monarchy.

Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis’ futures undecided as Prince George prepares to be king
Prince George, now 12, is widely expected to follow the traditional royal route. He will likely undertake a period of military service before stepping into senior duties.
However, decisions surrounding Charlotte and Prince Louis are still open-ended.
A former senior aide told The i, “William and Catherine are modern parents. They may have their thoughts, but I think they’ll wait to see what the children want to do.”
The insider added that the possibility of Charlotte and Louis building careers beyond the monarchy “has not been ruled out”. The uncertainty comes as Prince William prepares to lead a streamlined royal family when he eventually takes the throne.
Under his reign, the number of working royals is forecast to shrink to around five or six, roughly half the current figure and just a third of those active during Queen Elizabeth II’s time.
One royal source told the outlet, “William won’t have cousins helping him like the Queen [Elizabeth] did. So he’ll have to work smarter.”
Insiders believe this new approach will focus on shorter, more targeted campaigns and joint charity projects. It will reportedly move away from the tradition of royals serving as patrons for hundreds of individual organisations.

Prince William prepares for streamlined monarchy
Despite the planned restructuring, several senior figures are expected to maintain prominent roles.
Princess Anne, who turned 75 on August 15, has indicated she intends to continue her royal duties. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are also set to take on greater responsibilities. However, their children will not join the official royal payroll. Meanwhile, Zara Tindall and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are also not expected to take on official duties or become working royals under William’s reign.
The plan also excludes Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who stepped back from royal duties in 2020. Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, will similarly have no formal role within the working Royal Family.
With a future slimmed-down monarchy, the choices facing Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis could look dramatically different from those faced by previous generations.
While Prince George’s destiny as a future king is firmly set, his younger siblings may become part of a more modern royal blueprint, one that allows them to forge their own paths, either inside or outside the institution.
