Recent rumours suggested that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could make a documentary to mark the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death as part of their Netflix partnership.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced this month that their partnership with the streaming giant will continue as a “first-look deal”. A first-look deal means Netflix will have the first option on Harry and Meghan’s projects. It’s a more flexible, project-by-project approach compared to the five-year deal that they signed with Netflix in 2020.

Shortly after the news emerged, reports claimed that the Sussexes may be planning a 2027 documentary about Harry’s late mother, Diana. It would reportedly mark the 30th anniversary of her death.

However, Harry has now been warned over the potential move as a royal expert suggested that William could see the documentary as a “betrayal”.

Is Prince Harry making a documentary about Princess Diana?

Prince Harry, 40, hasn’t confirmed if he and Meghan, 44, are planning a documentary about Diana.

However, The Sun claimed that the idea is on a “long list” of potential projects that Netflix could produce with Harry and Meghan.

A source reportedly said: “If Harry wants to do it then Netflix will bite his hand off.”

It won’t go down very well with the king or with Prince William.

Now, royal commentators have weighed in. Speaking on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show, royal author Phil Dampier said: “I think Netflix will bite his arm off for this one. It would be very interesting to get his take on his mother.

“It won’t go down very well with the king or with Prince William.”

He added: “I think they’ll be absolutely horrified and Prince of Wales will particularly think that his mother’s being exploited when he wants to sort of leave that all behind him.”

Meanwhile, journalist Samara Gill said the move could be a “potential disaster” because “they will tell their side” of Diana’s “story”.

William would see Diana documentary as ‘betrayal’

Meanwhile, brand and culture expert Nick Ede told the Express: “Harry and his brother made a pact to keep her (Princess Diana) memory sacred and to preserve it in the best possible way, so William may see this as a betrayal and a way of cashing in on the anniversary.”

Royal Insider has contacted reps for Harry and William for comment.

William, 43, and Harry lost their mother on August 31, 1997. They were 15 and 12 respectively.

Over the years, they have marked the anniversary of her death together. In 2021, the brothers came together to unveil a statue in honour of their mother at Kensington Palace.

It marked what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday.

Harry and Meghan’s ‘rift’ with royal family

The appearance came just months after Harry and Meghan’s explosive Oprah interview, in which they hit out at the royal family and described their experience within the monarchy.

They had stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and moved to the United States. During the interview, Harry spoke of his strained relationship with William, saying they were on “different paths”.

Since then, Harry’s relationship with his family has seemingly become more strained. His 2023 tell-all memoir, Spare, appeared to strain relations even more.

In the book, Harry alleged that William physically attacked him over an altercation about Meghan in 2019.

In May this year, the Duke of Sussex told the BBC that he would “love a reconciliation” with his family. He’s due to return to the UK next month for the WellChild Awards.

Although there’s speculation he could meet with his father, King Charles, sources claim that a reconciliation between Harry and William has been “rejected”.
