Kate Middleton’s state banquet dress

Princess Kate glimmered on Wednesday night (September 17), as she joined other members of the royal family to mark US President Donald Trump’s second state visit to the UK.

The Princess of Wales, 43, rocked a full-length silk and sleeveless gown which had a golden Chantilly lace overcoat on top, designed by Phillipa Lepley.

The unique outfit was a twist on Kate’s usual style but was definitely a fitting number for the glamorous setting.

Kate’s dress was classic but also echoed a similar feel to her 2011 Alexander McQueen wedding gown, with the elegant high neckline and long sleeves.

Princess Kate also styled her ensemble to incorporate fashion favourites loved by Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana. Most notably, the Queen Mary’s Lovers Knot tiara, which sparkled atop Kate’s loosely waved tresses.

Tobias Kormind, Co-founder and MD of 77 Diamonds, Europe’s largest online diamond jeweller, previously shared the diadem’s legacy with us.

He explained: “The Queen Mary Lover’s Knot is captivating not just because of its design, but due to its storied legacy. Worn by four generations of royal women, it was famously favoured by both the late Queen and Princess Diana.

“Today, it is a go-to jewel for the Princess of Wales, who first wore it in 2015 at the Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace.”

He also noted how Kate has “since reached for it for many a state banquet and formal reception”.

Kate also sported teardrop earrings which once belonged to Prince William’s late grandmother. Queen Elizabeth II previously wore the diamonds to the State Opening of Parliament in 2012.

Kate completed her look with Anya Hindmarch’s “Maud” pearl-encrusted clutch bag and gold Aquazzura heels.

The Princess of Wales also wore a blue sash across her outfit, which signifies her position as a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.

Kate wore her medals pinned to her lace coat, including the the Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order for her services to the monarch, the Royal Family Order of King Charles III for members of the royal family and the Royal Companion of the Order of the Companions of Honour, which represents her work in public service and the arts.

The Prince and Princess of Wales shared a snap of their opulent outfits on their Instagram page, alongside the caption: “Ready for The State Banquet.”

“Wow you both look amazing. The Princess of Wales looks stunning,” chimed in a third.

The couple also shared a heartfelt behind-the-scenes moment on their Instagram story, where they held hands whilst stood outside in the dark, ready to head to the banquet.

The caption simply read “Behind The Scenes,” and gave a usually unseen glimpse into what goes into William and Kate’s formal appearances.
