Young Scout's 'unfiltered' question for Melania Trump after finding out they were going to meet Princess Kate
Kate and Melania spent the afternoon with the Scouts
On Thursday, September 18, Kate Middleton and Melania Trump stepped away from their royal and political duties and their husbands. They teamed up for a joint engagement at Frogmore House where they joined a group of four to six-year-old Squirrel Scouts from Lewisham, southeast London.
The pair, who had attended a royal banquet the evening before, shared a peaceful morning in nature, bonding over their mutual passion for children’s education.
But one young Scout stole the spotlight with a hilariously unfiltered question for First Lady Melania Trump after learning they’d be meeting a princess.

Young Scout asks Melania Trump question about Kate Middleton
“They knew they were coming to meet the princess,” Chief Scout Dwayne Fields told PEOPLE. “And one of the young asked Mrs Trump: ‘Are you the next princess?'”
Dwayne laughed, adding: “That gives an idea of how little they knew about the situation. But the beauty of being with young people is they’re unfiltered. They’ll say what they think and ask questions.”
Kate and Melania spent the morning alongside the Scouts as they worked toward their “Go Wild” badge.
But this wasn’t a polished photo op. Both women got their hands dirty, literally and figuratively, connecting with the kids in a way that felt authentic.
“The Princess of Wales is absolutely incredible with our young people,” Dwayne gushed. “[She] always mentions her young children. She recognises that sharing stories about her own young people is a great way to build a connection.”
Dwayne said Princess Kate sat on the grass with the children, crouching to their eye level to talk and make art, and “connecting” with what they were sharing. Melania mirrored the same approach, sitting with them, asking thoughtful questions, and reflecting on her own childhood.
“[Melania] was very engaging,” Dwayne added. “She asked lots of questions. They even made some artwork together. [She] remarked that some of the artwork took her back to when she was younger.”

Despite coming from very different worlds, Kate and Melania are united in their goal: to encourage and uplift the next generation.
Both women have made education a key focus of their public work: Kate through her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, and Melania through AI-focused education initiatives in the U.S.
Their presence brought international attention to the Scouts’ work.
“This is the home of Scouts,” Dwayne noted. “And for [Melania] to be able to take back what she experienced here is great.”
At the end of the visit, both women presented the children with their badges. In return, they were gifted Squirrel patches as honorary members of the group.
Dwayne praised the women for their involvement, adding that the experience will “live with [the children] for a very long time”.
He also shared a personal anecdote: giving Melania his own Chief Scout neckerchief.
Despite admitting that it’s “not something I typically do”, Dwayne emphasised that he wanted Melania to have “something that was symbolic of the Scouts here that she could take back”.
He also praised Kate for her unwavering support of the Scouts, noting how impactful her presence continues to be.
“We are very fortunate to have the Princess of Wales be our first female joint president,” he said.
