Inside Prince William and Britney Spears' 'email exchanges' as teenagers
The pop icon opened up about the almost-relationship in a 2002 interview
Prince William may be happily married to Princess Kate now, but once upon a time, the future king had a “cyber-relationship” with none other than the Princess of Pop.
Back in 2002, Britney Spears revealed that she and William had been emailing as teenagers, in a flirtatious exchange that nearly turned into an in-person meeting.

Prince William once had a ‘cyber-relationship’ with Britney Spears
Appearing on The Frank Skinner Show, a then-20-year-old Britney said: “We exchanged e-mails for a little bit. He was supposed to come and see me somewhere, but it didn’t work out.”
When asked by Skinner, “You were blown out by Prince William?” Britney laughed and replied: “Yeah.”
At the time, Britney was one of the biggest stars on the planet, riding the success of her smash hits Baby One More Time and Oops!… I Did It Again, and was in a high-profile relationship with NSYNC frontman Justin Timberlake.
According to the Daily Mail, William allegedly skipped out on the proposed date to go fox hunting instead. However, Buckingham Palace denied any romantic connection between the royal and the pop icon at the time.
Two decades later, royal biographer Christopher Andersen offered further insight into the surprising online flirtation.
In his 2021 book, Brothers and Wives: Inside the Private Lives of William, Kate, Harry and Meghan, Andersen wrote: “They tried to get together back when they were young.”
Speaking to Us Weekly in 2021, Andersen explained: “There may have been phone conversations. But I don’t recall that they ever actually managed to get together during that period.”

When Prince William met Kate Middleton
Although his flirtation with Spears fizzled out, William met his now-wife, Kate Middleton, in 2001 while both were students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
They began dating in 2003. The couple announced their engagement in 2010 and married in a globally televised ceremony at Westminster Abbey in 2011.
Now the Prince and Princess of Wales, the couple share three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Royal commentator Christopher Andersen noted the significance of both William and Harry choosing to marry “commoners”.
He told Us Weekly: “Kate, her mum was a flight attendant who grew up in public housing. Meghan obviously has working-class roots. She’s American, divorced, and biracial. But I think those are things Diana would have loved. The fact that they stepped outside of everybody’s comfort zone.”
This year, the Prince and Princess of Wales will mark 15th wedding anniversary.
Speaking about how the couple’s bond has grew stronger, body language expert Darren Stanton recently branded the pair a “real power couple”.
