Prince William will represent King Charles at a service for the new Archbishop of Canterbury.

The Prince of Wales, 43, will stand in for the king at the installation of Dame Sarah Mullally, who became the first female Archbishop of Canterbury last month.

In March, Kensington Palace has confirmed that William will attend the service at Canterbury Cathedral.

It’s been confirmed that the service will take place on March 25.

It’s a historic moment as the Archbishop became the first woman to lead the Church of England in the 1,400-year history of the role.

The heir to the throne usually attends the installation of the new Archbishop.

Charles previously attended the service in 2013 when Justin Welby was installed. At the time, Charles represented his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Earlier this week, Prince William and his wife, Princess Catherine, met the Archbishop at Lambeth Palace. It’s the London home of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Images appeared on social media of the meeting. The Prince and Princess of Wales’ Instagram account said: “A pleasure to meet the new Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally at Lambeth Palace – the first female leader of the Church of England.”

Meanwhile, the Archbishop said alongside a video meeting the royal couple: “It was a privilege to welcome the Prince and Princess of Wales to Lambeth Palace today.

“I know we hold the same hope for a better world and I look forward to working together in the years to come. I will continue to hold them and their family in my prayers.”

Days before that meeting, the Archbishop also met with King Charles. The meeting took place at Buckingham Palace.

The Archbishop’s Instagram account read alongside a photo of herself and the king: “It was a privilege to pay homage to His Majesty The King at Buckingham Palace.

“I give thanks for His Majesty’s deep Christian faith, demonstrated in his life of service to our nation and the Commonwealth. I was conscious today of having paid homage to the King’s late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, when I became Bishop of London.
