Queen Camilla seemed to send a message to US President Donald Trump with her brooch as she and King Charles arrived in Washington DC for their state visit on Monday.

The president and his wife, US First Lady Melania Trump, welcomed the king and queen to the White House.

For the occasion, Queen Camilla, 78, wore a white dress with black embroidery from Anna Valentine. She paired the look with nude heels. But it was her style of brooch that caught attention.

Queen Camilla sends ‘clear message’ to Trump with her brooch on state visit

Camilla decided to wear a brooch which featured the British and American flags.

According to former royal butler Grant Harrold, the late Queen Elizabeth II received the brooch as a gift by a New York mayor.

He said the brooch sent a clear message to President Trump.

Speaking on behalf of Slots Temple, Grant Harrold said: “This is very much an act of diplomacy. These things are never a coincidence or an accident, everything is carefully planned. They know that people will pick up on these things and that’s why they do it.

“The fact that she’s picked this brooch says a lot, she’s sending a clear message about what the king and queen hope to get from this trip – unity.”

‘Very much making a statement’

In addition, he said: “It shows the two countries in the union, which is what this trip is about – protecting that ‘Special Relationship’.

“And the decision not just to wear it on the first day of the trip, but from the moment they step on to US soil is key. It shows from the off, they are there for diplomacy. Donald and Melania Trump will notice it, and they will appreciate it. I have no doubt it will be a discussion point at their private meeting.

She’s sending a clear message about what the king and queen hope to get from this trip – unity.

“Wearing a brooch from the vaults is also a clever way to remind Trump about the past, as well as the future. It was a gift to the late Queen from a former New York mayor back in 1957, so will possibly cause the President to think back on decades of close ties between the two countries.

“The fact she moved it from the coat to the dress shows she wants it to be seen. That’s not standard practice. It’s very much making a statement.”

The king and queen will spend four days in the US. Meanwhile, the trip marks the 250th anniversary of American Independence, set to be celebrated on July 4.
