Meghan Markle and Prince Harry kicked off the Invictus Games this week in Germany, but some say the Duchess’ speech was a tad concerning.

Prince Harry opened the 2023 Invictus Games on Saturday with an inspiring speech in gratitude for the wounded and sick servicemen and women competitors.

The royal was met with a standing ovation as he sent a special shout-out to the new nations that joined the international sporting event: Israel, Colombia, and Nigeria. “Now, I’m not saying we play favorites in our home, but since my wife discovered she’s of Nigerian descent, it’s likely to get a little bit more competitive this year,” Harry joked.

Meghan Markle made her debut three days later on Tuesday with a speech explaining the delayed arrival, but her address hasn’t been well-received online.

Meghan Markle’s Invictus Games 2023 speech is ‘worrying’

Hours after her Tuesday arrival, the Duchess delivered a speech at an evening reception for the veteran competitors and their families.

She apologized for missing the start of the tournament, claiming that her mom duties were the reason behind her lateness.

“Just like so many of you, we know this is about family and friends and the community that Invictus has created and that Fisher House has created,” she said to a crowd of cheers.

Meghan continued: “It is so special to be here and I’m sorry I was a little late to the party. I had to spend a little more time getting our little ones settled at home and get them to drop off. Three milkshakes and a school drop off and I just landed a couple of hours ago.”

The internet has branded the Duchess as “self-absorbed” for the consistent use of “I” and talking about her own family, instead of focusing on the veterans.

“She speaks and still says ‘I’ and ‘me’ a dozen times,” criticized a Prince William and Kate Middleton fan. “Sorry ‘I’ was late. ‘I’ was buying milkshakes. ‘I can’t wait to bring MY children.’ ALWAYS makes it all about herself somehow.”

Meanwhile, Daniela Elser, a royal expert at News.com.au, noted that the short address showed “worrying symptoms of an infliction suffered by her brother-in-law Prince William, I-itis,” – a reference to how they tend to talk in the first person when sharing thoughts in speeches.

Elser added that “the cuff-ness was definitely showing” as Meghan used the word “I” 11 times in her statements.

Harry, on the other hand, focused on the importance of the competitors to “connect with each other”.

Meghan Markle keeps it casual at Invictus 2023 in high-street brand

Markle usually steps out in her luxury staples, including her Chanel slingbacks, Hermes scarf, and Goyard tote, but she switched out the pricy items for a more accessible look at this year’s games.

The Duchess rocked a black Banana Republic shirt dress that now retails for less than $60. With only two sizes left, it’s clear that the Meghan Markle effect is still in full swing.

According to the premium fashion app, Lyst, brands experience a 200 per cent increase in search demand over the following week if Markle sports one of their products.
