The strict palace menu rule that if defied would be 'deleted' with 'a thick black marker' explained
The royals are very particular...
Former royal chef Darren McGrady has opened up about a very specific palace rule that is stuck to, to please the royal family.
Here is everything we know…
Explaining a very strict palace rule
We know the royal family has a plethora of traditions and rules that they stick to and that the various palaces have their own rules, habits and restrictions to keep everything in check. This of course also includes the palace kitchens.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady, in a conversation with Heart Bingo Online, explained that King Charles has a very specific food preference. And because of this, a particular rule is kept up in the royal family’s residences. Especially at Buckingham Palace.
McGrady detailed: “The royal family eat by seasons. If I put strawberries on the menu in January, there would be a huge thick black marker through the menu book deleting those strawberries. How dare you even suggest strawberries in January. King Charles would have the same feedback on this too.

King Charles’ requests whilst eating at his royal residences
“Having said that, at Balmoral Castle where they have their own royal gardens and an abundance of fresh strawberries, the best Scottish strawberries of Balmoral. And also the raspberries, gooseberries, tayberries, fraises des bois, red currants, blackcurrants, the soft berries were amazing. We could put those on the menu every day and the Queen would pass them because they were in season.
“They absolutely did eat in season. At Sandringham for Christmas, where a lot of the hunting goes on, you’ve got rich venison stews, haunches of venison. Moving to the palace and then on to Windsor Castle for Easter court, it’s all the spring food that’s being served.

“King Charles is not a big fan of chocolate, so that wouldn’t be on the menu. But he really loves his vegetable gardens, so soon the peaches will be coming in from the hothouses at Windsor Castle. There are lots of spring dishes. A lot of lamb on the menu and a lot of fish.

“In place of big chocolate puddings, the king is a huge fan of cheese, so seeing lots of cheese and honey on the menu.”
King Charles’ favourite chocolate dessert
Although Charles is not known to be a big fan of chocolate, he was fond of a very delicious sounding sweet dish, named Crathie Crunch.
“The Queen was given the recipe at a Crathie estate fair…we tried it out and it became so popular it would always be on the menu at Balmoral Castle,” chef McGrady explained in his YouTube video where he demonstrated the recipe.
The dessert is essentially a luxurious mint and dark chocolate cheesecake – without the cheese.

“Layers of chocolate biscuit and fluffy mint. Whipped cream and chocolate mints on the top,” Darren McGrady described.
It sounds lovely!
