King Charles has issued a powerful call for unity ahead of Commonwealth Day, urging the 56 nations of the Commonwealth to embrace their shared values during what he describes as “uncertain times”.

In a statement released ahead of the annual Westminster Abbey service on Monday (March 10), the monarch emphasised the importance of building bridges between nations.

“In these uncertain times, where it is all too easy to believe that our differences are problems instead of a source of strength and an opportunity for learning, the Commonwealth’s remarkable collection of nations and peoples come together in the spirit of support and, crucially, friendship,” the king stated.

This year’s Commonwealth Day message comes as King Charles is increasingly drawn into global issues.

Charles has recently met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Both leaders have faced pressure from the United States and its shifting foreign policy.

King Charles releases statement for Commonwealth Day

This year’s message from the monarch highlights the strength of the Commonwealth.

“The Commonwealth’s ability to bring together people from all over the world has stood the test of time and remains as ever-important today,” the king continued.

He ended the statement, saying: “As we mark this Commonwealth Day together, there is no more important task than to restore the disrupted harmony of our entire planet.  For the sake of our younger generations’ threatened future, I can only hope that the Commonwealth will continue its vital work to restore that harmony.”

The statement was shared on Instagram.

“Tomorrow is Commonwealth Day,” the accompanying caption read. “A day to celebrate the 56 nations of the Commonwealth who work together on shared goals like development, democracy, and peace.

“In his annual message to the Commonwealth, the king reflects on the friendship and support which member states receive from one another.”

The Commonwealth’s ability to bring together people from all over the world has stood the test of time.

The monarch’s message is being closely analysed given his recent meetings with key global leaders, including Zelenskyy and Trudeau.

The king’s engagement with Zelenskyy followed a tense meeting between Zelenskyy and President Trump. The United States has been pushing for an end to the war with Russia.

Meanwhile, King Charles met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Canada has also faced increasingly strained relations with the US following controversial remarks from Donald Trump. The president suggested that Canada should become the “51st US state”.

Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey

The Commonwealth Day celebrations will be marked with a multicultural service at Westminster Abbey.

The celebrations will be attended by King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Princess Kate.

This year’s event will showcase the diversity of the Commonwealth. Entertainment will include a pipe band from a Hindu eco-temple in London, a performance by the Masai Cultural Arts team and a musical tribute from Joan Armatrading, who will be singing her song Love and Affection.

The annual service is one of the most important events in the royal calendar. It brings together leaders, diplomats, and cultural representatives from across the Commonwealth.

Following Trump’s suggestion that Canada should be absorbed into the US, many Canadians have turned to King Charles – their official head of state – calling on him to address the issue directly.

Social media users flooded the royal family’s Instagram page. Many urged the king to make an official visit to Canada as a symbolic show of support.

“As the head of the Crown, if the commonwealth, we look to you, our king for support and strength to protect your commonwealth country, Canada,” one fan wrote. “God bless the king. God bless the entire royal family!”

“Stand up for Canada!” Another commented.

“Organise a state visit to Canada,” a third also pleaded.
