King Charles showcased his compassion during a visit to Scotland this week, stopping to comfort a teenage cadet who fainted during the ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Kirkcaldy War Memorial in Fife.

The king and Queen Camilla were welcomed by hundreds of well-wishers, umbrellas in hand, despite the steady rain.

They unveiled a commemorative stone Cairn and laid a wreath at the war memorial. King Charles and Camilla couple also observed a minute’s silence to honour the lives lost in war.

However, the solemn event took a sudden turn when 13-year-old local cadet Robbie McGovern collapsed during the ceremony and required medical assistance.

Thankfully, Robbie recovered quickly. As a gesture of goodwill, he was invited to meet the king before his departure.

Charles warmly shook the young cadet’s hand and showed concern for his well-being, asking: “Did you hit your head?”

“No,” Robbie responded, as reported in The Mirror. But when the king asked if he felt any buzzing in his ears, Robbie nodded and admitted “a little bit.”

Charles reassured him, saying: “Don’t worry, I remember.”

The moment underscored the king’s compassion, even amid a busy day of official engagements.

The unveiling of the commemorative Cairn, which contains school caps, badges, and USB drives filled with children’s stories as a time capsule, was met with applause.

Sculptor George Sweeney crafted the piece from local sandstone over four and a half months.

“They wanted something special to mark the centenary of the memorial gardens,” he shared. “Because of what it represents, I feel very proud. It’s an honour and privilege. I hope the king likes it. I hope it gets royal approval.”

Among the enthusiastic crowd was seven-year-old Jackson Sergeant, dressed in traditional Scottish attire and accompanied by his mum since 5:30 a.m.

“I did get wet,” he admitted, “but it was worth it to meet the king and queen.”

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who joined Prince William the day before at his Homewards event in Sheffield, also attended the ceremony. He met with King Charles to discuss his Multibank initiative, which supports low-income families with essential goods.

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla visited the nearby Maggie’s Cancer Centre at Victoria Hospital in her role as the charity’s president. There, she praised the centre’s “invaluable” work and embraced its founder and CEO, Dame Laura Lee.

“There is something so special about them,” Camilla gushed, referring to the 24 Maggie’s centres nationwide.

Camilla also met honorary patron Christine Harkness, the Euromillions winner who helped establish Maggie’s Fife in 2006.

On Tuesday, the couple kicked off their visit with separate appearances in and around Edinburgh.

During the day, the king was ceremonially presented with the keys to the city of Edinburgh.

Queen Camilla officially opened Ratho Library in Newbridge. She was joined by acclaimed Edinburgh-based crime writer Sir Ian Rankin.
