King Charles' 'bizarre rules' over his toothpaste, bedsheets, baths and eggs

Charles knows how to live like a true king...
Lottie O'Neill

What is a day in the life of a king like? Well for King Charles, this reportedly means having staffers squeeze your toothpaste every morning and strict egg rules, even from when he was a prince.

The “ridiculous” demands from the monarch were alleged through Omid Scobie’s book, Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival.

The bombshell biography, written by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle supporter who penned their book Finding Freedom, was published in 2023.

We revisit the outlandish claims Scobie wrote in his book, especially over King Charles, formerly Prince of Wales, rule over toothpaste.

King Charles’ ‘odd instruction over toothpaste’ was fit for a prince

Scobie’s book made several allegations, and Buckingham Palace never responded to any of them from the biography.

He wrote that the 76-year-old allegedly has someone help him get ready for bed, in a bizarre tradition.

He claimed King Charles, dad of Prince William and Harry, “likes to have someone squeeze exactly one inch of toothpaste onto his toothbrush for him ahead of his bedtime routine”.

Scobie further alleged: “The cherry on top of this ridiculous extravagance: the toothpaste must come from a ‘crested silver dispenser.”

Bombshell accusations

The author continued with other claims, such as ordering his royal chefs to cook his soft-boiled eggs for “four minutes – no more, no less, or they’ll be sent back to the kitchen in infantile fury”.

As well as having “perfectly steamed” 1,000-thread-count bedsheets on his bed, and having “temper tantrums” if his pyjamas were not pressed.

King Charles reportedly never throws away his old shoes, but has a cobbler work on them to ‘bring them back to life’ if they’re showing their age.

Scobie also claimed the monarch’s shoelaces had to be ironed, which seemed like a lot of effort.

Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former butler, also made his own claims in the 2015 documentary about the then Prince Charles – but it had nothing to do with toothpaste.

He said at the time in the show, called Serving the Royals: Inside the Firm, that Charles’ needed the temperature of his bath water ‘just right.

Paul explained the “water temperature has to be just tepid”, and only “half full” with the plug in a “certain position”.

However, after rumours Charles travels with his own toilet seat and paper as he refuses to sit on any other, the king came out to deny it. His wife Queen Camilla also thought the rumour was nonsense and asked who would believe it.

Considering that has been debunked, King Charles having his toothpaste squeezed for him since he was a prince, is likely on that list.
