As Meghan Markle UK return rumours bubble 'burnt' Kate Middleton cannot get over Meghan's 'betrayal'

The two royals have history...

Meghan Markle and Princess Kate Middleton have been known to share a frosty relationship. Initially the two royals were said to share a civil, although not exactly warm connection, when Meghan first entered into royal life in 2016.

However, a disagreement over Meghan’s wedding and the Sussexes eventual exit from the royal fold definitely put a strain on things. Since then, the two royals are said to have not seen eye to eye.

Princess Kate Middleton feels ‘betrayed’ by Meghan Markle

And now, as rumours swirl that Meghan could be preparing for a return to the UK, Kate Middleton is said to not be thrilled.

“Kate’s not thrilled, and that’s putting it mildly. She feels there are lines that, once crossed, can’t simply be erased,” an insider has claimed. “The betrayals committed by Harry in those revelations in [his memoir] Spare still burn. In Kate’s view, publicly criticising the institution on global platforms did real damage. She believes that kind of exposure chipped away at public trust. She thinks repeated public criticism from inside the family is destabilising. It undermines the Crown at its core, and at this already very delicate time for the royals with the arrest of Andrew, William and Kate are dead against the return of the Sussexes. In their view, a Sussex return would cause more instability, not less.”

Harry and Meghan’s return to the spotlight

In recent weeks the Sussexes have made a return to the spotlight. Meghan stepped out to the Fifteen Percent Pledge Fundraising Gala solo, where she put on a glam display in a black and cream gown.

She and Harry then enjoyed a date night at an NBA game days later, with snaps of the duo on the front row being widely circulated.

More recently, the Sussexes made a trip to Jordan.

Evidently, during this trip, their advocacy and humanitarian work took centre stage.

Seemingly implying that they too can step up and shoulder the burden of public life – but in their own way.

The insider continued, telling Closer: “The Jordan visit demonstrated that they can deliver serious, high-impact engagements without being entangled in the reputational damage overshadowing the institution. In their view, it was proof of global relevance, diplomatically calibrated and rooted in service. Harry has become increasingly convinced that the Royal family is facing a ‘constitutional crisis’, and that he and Meghan could help steady the ship. Between Andrew’s arrest, the Jeffrey Epstein fallout, the reputational damage and the lack of working royals in their thirties and forties, he thinks there’s a genuine vacuum. He believes they could fill it.”

William and Kate are not ‘thrilled’ about Harry and Meghan’s return

Meanwhile, Harry is said to believe the monarchy need “fresh faces,” to carry them through Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s recent scandal.

Elsewhere, Princess Kate Middleton and Prince William are said to not be so convinced.

“There’s a feeling that you can’t turn your back on duty and then re-enter when it suits,” the insider claimed. “Kate believes service is long-term. It’s not conditional. The door has been closed from their side. Kate has made her position very clear and she has let the King know her feelings on the matter. She feels a real sense of betrayal at the idea of them coming back like nothing happened… She does not believe bringing Meghan back into the fold could help the monarchy. In her view, it would inflame everything. William feels that bringing Harry and Meghan back would reopen old divisions at the worst possible time. It would look chaotic. Some advisers think reconciliation would strengthen the institution but William and Kate believe it would destabilise it.”

Ultimately, only time will tell as Harry and Meghan’s alleged return looms…

Representatives for the Sussexes and Kensington Palace have been contacted for comment.
