A new photograph of the senior members of the royal family was released this week for a special reason.

On Tuesday, members of the monarchy stepped out to attend a reception in honour of Queen Elizabeth II. April 21 marked what would have been the late monarch’s 100th birthday.

King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted a reception in honour of the occasion. Guests included representatives of the late queen’s former charities and patronages, as well as some very special centenarians, who also celebrated their 100th birthday.

Senior royals were also in attendance, including the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

However, the latest photo of the working royals has left some royal fans worried.

Royal family photograph sparks concern among fans

The photograph showed the king and queen in the centre. Next to them were the Prince and Princess of Wales, Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Meanwhile, the late queen’s cousins Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and Princess Alexandra of Kent completed the picture.

The Instagram post was captioned: “The King and Queen are joined by members of The Royal Family to remember the life of Queen Elizabeth II.”

The image reflects a slimmed-down monarchy, something King Charles reportedly vowed to do when he became monarch.

However, it’s caused some concern among fans.

‘Concern’ over royal family picture

One person said: “How much more ‘slimmed down’ can they get?”

Another commented: “This is the reality. Beatrice and Eugenie need to become working royals. William and Catherine can’t do this alone.”

A third added: “This slimmed down monarchy looks tired. Love the Waleses!! But, you need @sussexroyal by your side for the future to remain young and vibrant.”

Meanwhile, GB News’ royal commentator Cameron Walker said on X: “As charming as this image is, it illustrates a challenge facing The King and The Prince of Wales: a shortage of younger working royals.

How much more ‘slimmed down’ can they get?

“Can they stay connected with younger generations, represent the Commonwealth, and maintain a full programme of engagements for decades to come? Or does Prince William’s planned “change” signal a fundamentally different era for the monarchy?”

However, someone else said: “What a lovey surprise!!! I love this family picture.”

Another gushed: “What a fantastic surprise! It is such a treat to have this lovely portrait of the working royals.”

New ‘fab four’ in royal family

Many noticed the absence of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who stepped away from their senior working royal roles in 2020.

Others also labelled the new “fab four”. William, Kate, Harry and Meghan were once branded the “fab four” when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were working royals.

Alongside a photo of Prince Edward, Duchess Sophie, Prince William and Princess Catherine at the palace reception this week, one fan gushed: “The Fab Four!”

Another wrote: “THE Fab Four,” while someone else agreed: “Now that’s definitely a fab four.”

Meanwhile, others felt Harry and Meghan’s absence from the royal family photograph. One commented: “Very Sad. No Prince Harry and Princess Meghan.”

Another added: “You pushed out Harry & Meghan, the only two that gave the royal family pizzazz, only to be left with THIS?!”
