Fergie and Diana were once close friends

A royal author has claimed exactly why Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana once fell out.

Sarah and Diana shared a close friendship when they married into the royal family. Diana married then-Prince Charles in 1981 and Sarah tied the knot with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in 1986.

However, years later, the pair reportedly fell out. According to author Andrew Lownie, Sarah and Diana fell out over Sarah’s 1996 autobiography, My Story, “in which she referred to catching a verruca [wart] from borrowing some shoes from Lady Diana”.

Reason behind Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana ‘fallout’

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Lownie claimed: “In fact, the reality was that Diana was very concerned that Sarah Ferguson might well be selling stories about her, and that relationship was never repaired, though Sarah Ferguson pretended it had.”

He also alleged that Diana, who died in 1997 following a car accident, would come to Sarah “every Sunday, and they would moan about the royal family”.

He claimed: “They both felt very restricted within the confines of the royal family. But at the same time, there were some concerns Diana had that Fergie perhaps was too boisterous, and she was kind of undermining Diana’s own reputation, and she began to distance herself.”

Following Diana’s death, Sarah revealed that they hadn’t spoken in a year.

“Because we were like siblings… we rowed. And the saddest thing, at the end, we hadn’t spoken for a year,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.

Diana was very concerned that Sarah Ferguson might well be selling stories about her.

“I tried, wrote letters, thinking whatever happened didn’t matter, let’s sort it out. And I knew she’d come back. In fact, the day before she died she rang a friend of mine and said, ‘Where’s that Red? I want to talk to her.'”

Sarah also said: “I really miss Diana. I loved her so much.”

Diana died in August 1997 following a car accident in Paris. Sarah attended her funeral alongside members of the royal family.
