Kate Middleton helps her husband Prince William see “reputational damage” to the monarchy, a royal author has claimed.

In recent months, the royal family has faced intense scrutiny over allegations against William’s uncle Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

For some time Andrew, 66, has faced scrutiny over his past association with late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Police arrested him in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

It came after he was accused of sharing sensitive and confidential information with Epstein during his time as UK’s trade envoy. Andrew has always denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. The police investigation continues.

Amid the scrutiny, reports have suggested that the Prince of Wales has been the driving force behind the decision-making when it comes to Andrew.

Kate Middleton’s ‘role’ in monarchy as Prince William ‘tougher’ than King Charles

Speaking to The i Paper, royal author Andrew Lownie said he believes William “is calling the shots more now that we’re in this transitional phase towards him taking over”.

He continued: “I think he’s cleaner than the others and the tension is that he wants a clean stable when he moves into the role of king. William also has Kate, who is a really tough one, and behind that smiling exterior she’s like the steely queen mum.

“Kate gets how it all works. I’m always struck that it is often the outsiders who better understand the institution rather than those who are born to it.

William’s ‘frustration’ over Andrew scandal

Lownie also claimed that William may feel “annoyed and frustrated that the buck keeps being passed on the Andrew issue – that the Queen passed it to Charles. Charles has had three years to address this, and hasn’t really done it. There’s some tension about that”.

Last year, King Charles initiated a formal process to have his brother Andrew’s royal titles and honours removed. Andrew was also ordered to leave his Royal Lodge mansion in Windsor.

He now lives on the Sandringham Estate. The royal family has distanced from Andrew. He has kept a low profile for months.

Thames Valley police recently confirmed it was investigating an allegation that Andrew behaved inappropriately towards a woman at Royal Ascot in 2002.
