Prince William and Kate Middleton have been married for 12 years, however, just like any other couple the pair have had their ups and downs. It’s not every day you meet someone who will one day make you the future Queen, so the Prince had to make sure his future wife had ‘the best guidance’ to join the family.

Before their huge royal wedding, watched by millions across the globe, the couple actually split up shortly after graduation. Of course, they found their way back together, and Prince William popped the question three years later in Kenya.

Prince William wanted to give Kate a ‘chance to back out’

The royal couple met in 2001, however, it wasn’t until nine years later that they were finally engaged. A big contrast to his brother Prince Harry, who proposed to Meghan Markle after a year of dating.

Of course, Wills has been asked about the delay in the couple’s 2010 engagement interview with Tom Brady.

Brady already had the reason figured out, as he asked the Prince whether the time was because he wanted to give his future wife “time to back out.”

“Massively so,” the Prince agreed. However, as well as his future wife, he also had his in-law’s best interests at heart.

“Her and her family, I really want to make sure that they have the best, sort of, guidance and chance to see what life has been like – or what life is like – in the family. That’s kind of why I have been waiting this long as I wanted to give her a chance to see and to back out if she needed to.”

Kate took the comments in jest as she laughed along with her husband.

On the split, the couple said they were ‘finding themselves and their own way’ before coming back together “for the better.”

Although, the Princess of Wales detailed how she wasn’t very happy about it at the time, but in hindsight, it made her a stronger person.

I really valued that time for me as well although I didn’t think it at the time. Looking back on it,” she said.

The couple is now happily married after 12 years and share three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Kate went ‘bright red’ meeting William for the first time

2001 seems like a lifetime ago, however for Kate, it was the year that changed her life forever, and we’re sure she remembers it very fondly.

The pair met at St Andrews University, however, recalling the moment they first laid eyes on each other, Kate may have wanted it to go down a little differently as she was left rosy-cheeked.

Although it may be hard to imagine, Prince William actually stayed in accommodation during the time of his degree, the same one as his future wife.

Recalling that first moment that was set to change the course of her life forever, Kate said: “I actually went bright red when I met you and scuttled off, feeling very shy about meeting you.”

Honestly, we don’t blame her.
