Prince George is celebrating his 12th birthday today. While this isn’t normally considered a big milestone birthday, it could be a “poignant” one for the young royal.

On July 22, a new photo was released of George to mark his special day.

To also mark the occasion, two royal commentators have explained the reason why this year might put Prince William and Princess Kate’s eldest child at a “crossroads”.

Prince George could be at ‘crossroads’ on 12th birthday

In an interview with the Express, royal author, Duncan Larcombe, reportedly explained: “12 years old is a bit of a crossroads for a lot of kids when they’re growing up. One more year and he’ll be a teenager, and he’ll be off to a different school away from his brother and sister. I think 12 is quite a poignant birthday.”

Duncan said that children aged 12 “become little people rather than being a little child”.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond echoed this sentiment, saying: “Being a ‘tweenager’ comes with a lot of challenges. It will seem to George that his world is getting bigger on every level: physical, mental, emotional, and social.”

She movingly continued: “He must already have had a very emotional year and a half since his grandfather and his mother were diagnosed with cancer, and now he knows that he is in his last year of being wrapped in the familiar blanket of living with his parents and siblings 24/7 before he moves to big school next September.”

Which school will George attend?

On the topic of big school, where George will continue his education has been the topic of much speculation from royal fans.

It has been widely reported that George could be following in his father’s footsteps at the prestigious Eton College. Meanwhile, other sources have suggested his parents are also considering Marlborough College, where Kate attended school.

One more year and he’ll be a teenager, and he’ll be off to a different school away from his brother and sister.

While Kensington Palace has yet to announce what establishment the royal family has chosen, Jennie predicted that the decision has “undoubtedly already been made”.

She also believes George was “very influential” in the decision.

Currently, all three of William and Kate’s children attend Lambrook school in rural Berkshire, which takes children up to age 13. Before the family’s relocation to Windsor, Prince George and younger sister Princess Charlotte previously attended Thomas’s Battersea in London.

There’s also another important reason why 12 could be a milestone birthday for Prince George. In royal tradition, this is the age at which those in line to the throne stop travelling by air together. So going forward, William (heir to the throne) and son George (second in line) might have to start travelling separately.

However, this hasn’t been confirmed by the family.
