Kate Middleton's 'regret' over Christmas day outfit: 'I shouldn't have worn this'
In 2019, Kate seemingly regretted her cosy coatdress
Kate Middleton is known for her flawless fashion sense, and her Christmas Day ensembles are always a highlight of the royal calendar.
Each year, royal fans eagerly await the royals’ traditional walkabout in Sandringham. Not just for a glimpse of the royals, but to see what the royal women are wearing.
But in 2019, Kate admitted she got it wrong.
That year, the Princess of Wales stepped out in a striking dove-grey Catherine Walker coat, complete with plush faux fur trims on the collar and cuffs.
She paired the elegant winter look with a forest-green head accessory, clutch bag, and matching heels. But while she looked perfectly polished, the reality was less comfortable it seems.

Kate Middleton admits regret over Christmas Day outfit
Christmas Day 2019 turned out to be unusually mild. Princess Kate, dressed in heavy wool from head to toe, reportedly became “too hot” during the traditional walk in the winter sun.
According to Karen Anvil, who was among the well-wishers gathered outside the church that morning, the princess made the candid confession to her daughter Rachel.
I really shouldn’t have worn this.
“Kate was talking to my daughter about clothes and how she was feeling too hot,” Karen recalled, as reported by Metro at the time. The princess reportedly told Rachel: “I really shouldn’t have worn this.”
In recent years, Kate has favoured coats with more breathable necklines, like V-necks or lower rounded styles. This allows her to layer with turtlenecks or scarves as needed, without the risk of overheating.
For example, last year, she wore a deep green V-neck coat paired with a navy and green checked scarf.

Royal family on Christmas Day
Christmas morning at Sandringham is steeped in tradition. It starts with very different mornings for the royal men and women.
According to former royal chef Darren McGrady, the women typically enjoy a light breakfast in their rooms. Meanwhile, the men head downstairs for a full breakfast of bacon, eggs, mushrooms, and even grilled kidneys.
By 11am, the whole family emerges for the public walk to church, giving onlookers a chance to admire the royal fashion and take in one of the year’s most iconic royal photo ops.
The 2019 walk was particularly memorable. Not just for Kate’s coat, but because it marked the first time Prince George, now 12, and Princess Charlotte, now 10, joined the grown ups for church.
Prince Louis made his Christmas debut in 2022.
Last year saw the Princess of Wales in green. However, she rarely repeats a holiday colour two years in a row.
With her recent preferences leaning toward rich tones, many royal watchers are predicting she’ll opt for burgundy or navy for this year’s Christmas Day outing.
