Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has lost out on yet another honour, this time in the city that is part of his dukedom, York.

As per the York Press, Andrew’s name has been covered up by a plaque on a famous bridge in the city.

A new metal plaque has been placed over the Duke of York name on Millennium Bridge, in York.

City of York Council’s transport boss said, as reported by York Press, the new plaque “reflects the valuable contributions” of the original trustees for the bridge, “as well as York residents’ wish to distance the city from its former association with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor”.

The plaque had previously been unveiled by Andrew to mark the opening of Millennium Bridge in 2001.

The part of the plaque that described that it had been “unveiled by His Royal Highness the Duke of York” on May 29, 2001, has now been covered up.

The new sign states: “The bridge was opened by the Lord Mayor of the city of York councillor Shan Braund on 10th April 2001.”

Residents of the city of York wish to ‘distance’ themselves from Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor

Cllr Kate Ravilious, the council’s executive member for transport, said of the matter to the publication: “Following a constructive proposal from the original trustees of Millennium Bridge, we altered the plaque some time ago to incorporate the wording they proposed. The current plaque reflects the valuable contributions of those trustees, as well as York residents’ wish to distance the city from its former association with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

“The bridge continues to be a valued transport link for communities on both sides of the River Ouse and for residents and visitors to York.”

Kilbane had also previously said that residents had made it “clear about their wish to disassociate the city with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and this extends to any plaques located around the city”.

He said: “No definitive central record of all plaques exists so we welcome any contact from the public to help identify them.”

The change comes after Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s recent arrest on suspicion of misconduct whilst previously working as the UK’s trade envoy.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was ‘stripped’ of his titles

In October last year, the palace announced that Andrew’s remaining royal titles and honours would be removed. It came amid renewed scrutiny around his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.

For years, Andrew has faced backlash and questions over his links to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. He has also faced allegations of sexual assault.

Virginia Giuffre, who took her own life last April, alleged she was made to have sex with Andrew on three separate occasions in the early 2000s when she was 17 after being trafficked by Epstein.

Andrew always denied these allegations.

Andrew’s dukedom explained

Despite King Charles’ decision to remove his younger brother’s “prince” title and HRH styling, ministers have confirmed that the dukedom itself is still intact, unless Parliament decides otherwise.

Andrew was given the title Duke of York in 1986 when he married Sarah Ferguson.

While the king can remove titles and honours using special royal rules (called Letters Patent), dukedoms are a type of hereditary peerage, and removing them would need a new law.

In recent months, Andrew has been lying low following his arrest an subsequent release.
