Princess Eugenie’s pregnancy announcement appeared, on the surface, to be a routine piece of positive royal news.

However, according to one royal commentator, the manner of its release offers a clearer indication of her position within the royal family and the support she continues to command.

The news was formally issued via Buckingham Palace. Eugenie had also shared the news on her personal Instagram account.

TV royal commentator Afua Acheampong-Hagan argues that this move by the palace is meaningful.

Princess Eugenie ‘clearly still in favour’ with royal family amid pregnancy announcement

“I think it is interesting that, although there was a post on social media as well, that the official announcement came from Buckingham Palace,” she explained to the Mirror. “I think this does mean she is clearly still in favour with the royal family.”

In her view, the decision goes beyond standard protocol. She said it reflects a more considered approach by the palace at a sensitive time.

“I think it also gives her a bit of protection at this time,” she said. “A delicate time, early pregnancy, but also that kind of umbrella gathering in of the royal family announcing signifies, ‘She’s still under our wing, she’s under our protection, she’s taken care of.'”

‘She’s being protected’

Such a move, she suggests, conveys both an internal and external message about Eugenie’s standing within the monarchy. It comes as scrutiny continues to surround her parents, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson.

“It’s kind of a bit of a ‘Back off, we’re protecting this girl, our granddaughter, our niece, at this delicate time, and that’s why we’re announcing,'” Afua added.

I think this does mean she is clearly still in favour with the royal family.

Afua said she believes it’s “significant that they wrote at the end that the king is delighted”. She said this again is that “reiteration that she’s been protected – that she’s beloved by the royal family, that she’s been taken under the wing of the king”.

Afua believes the announcement was “deliberately done in that way”.

Scandal surrounding Andrew and Sarah

The news comes at a time of heightened public attention for the royal family.

Eugenie’s parents Andrew and Ferguson have maintained a low profile in recent months following renewed scrutiny linked to the latest Epstein files. The files reportedly included email exchanges allegedly involving the pair and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Both Andrew and Ferguson have faced scrutiny over their past links to Epstein for years. Last year, Andrew lost his royal titles amid mounting scrutiny. He was also arrested in February of this year on suspicion of misconduct in public office. It came after he was accused of sharing confidential and sensitive information with Epstein during his time as UK’s trade envoy.

Andrew has always denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. Being named or pictured in the Epstein files isn’t an indication of wrongdoing.

It is understood Andrew is staying at the Sandringham Estate after leaving Royal Lodge in Windsor amid the scrutiny. Meanwhile, Ferguson is said to be moving between residences.
