Meghan Markle under fire as she's accused of 'copying' Prince William as he attempts to settle controversial debate
The duchess was accused of copying William after she shared her take on scones
Meghan Markle has come under fire online after royal fans accused her of “copying” Prince William, following his latest comments about one of Britain’s most fiercely debated topics: the correct way to eat a scone.
Both royals shared their takes on the nation’s most divisive afternoon tea tradition within days of each other.
The debate was reignited on Friday when Prince William appeared on Heart FM. He was asked whether he followed the Cornish or Devon tradition when it came to assembling a scone.

Meghan Markle accused of ‘copying’ Prince William
“I love that I’m the authority on scones,” he joked. “I can only tell you what I learned from my grandmother. She would definitely… she would have the cream on first.”
William referenced his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, suggesting the monarch preferred cream before jam, a method associated with Cornwall rather than Devon.
Just a day later, Meghan’s lifestyle brand As Ever posted a polished baking video featuring freshly made scones, complete with jam, cream, and floral sprinkles.
The clip showed a generous layer of cream spread onto a warm scone before jam was added on top, mirroring the same “cream first” approach William had referenced.
The caption read: “Memorial weekend plans. Baking warm scones topped with our Strawberry or Raspberry Spread, Orange Blossom Honey, and Flower Sprinkles.”

‘What a coincidence’
Almost immediately, social media lit up with claims that Meghan’s post was timed suspiciously close to William’s interview.
One user fumed: “She does it every bloody single time. Our RF have media exposure, then suddenly Meghan has to copy it! This time, Prince William telling us how the late queen liked to eat her scones, hey presto, a post showing the exact same.”
Another wrote: “What a coincidence that right after Prince William described scones, Meghan tries to copy this.”
“William was asked about scones, jam and cream in a radio interview. Like clockwork, a couple of hours later, Meghan had to copy,” a third added.
And another commented: “Meghan has no scone preference. She’s American. She has no opinion but to copy William. It’s embarrassing.”

Royal family and scones
The question of how to build the perfect scone is not new within royal circles.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady previously claimed that at Buckingham Palace garden parties, the rule was often “jam first”.
“Jam first at Buckingham Palace garden parties!” he wrote on social media in 2018.
That same year, King Charles hinted at his own preference during a visit to the Royal Cornwall Show, jokingly questioning a young boy eating a scone the Devon way: “Have you got that the right way round?”
Scones themselves have long been a staple of royal afternoon tea. They were even served at the wedding of King Charles and Queen Camilla in 2005, alongside treats like strawberry tartlets and glazed fudge.

Meghan’s nicknames for Archie and Lilibet
Meanwhile, Meghan has continued to share glimpses of family life with Prince Harry. In a recent video for As Ever, she revealed her household’s favourite spreads and showed off her affectionate nicknames for her children.
“Everyone in my family has a different favourite,” she said. “My husband loves the raspberry.”
She then added: “Lil loves the strawberry. Arch likes both. And I like the marmalade.”
