Kate Middleton's wedding request 'sparked panic at palace' as she 'broke tradition'
It's been 15 years since the big dayKate Middleton reportedly sparked some panic at the palace with a decision regarding her wedding day.
Her preference for a different mode of transport to Westminster Abbey reportedly led to heightened concern among royal officials.
Traditionally, royal brides have travelled by horse-drawn carriage on their wedding day. However, Catherine chose not to follow this custom. Instead, she opted to arrive by car, signalling a subtle shift away from established precedent.
Today marks 15 years since Kate and William’s wedding day. They tied the knot at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011.

What car did Kate Middleton ride in on her wedding day?
Her preferred vehicle was a 1977 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI, reportedly gifted to the late Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her silver jubilee.
According to royal commentator Russell Myers in his new book, William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story, the decision came as a surprise to courtiers.
He wrote: “Courtiers were also surprised when Catherine announced her wish not to travel in the traditional horse-drawn Glass Coach, as used by Diana, Princess of Wales, as well as Queen Elizabeth.
“As much as tradition was at the forefront of her mind, Catherine wanted a modern slant on the proceedings and was of the view that she was not yet a ‘princess’ who would use such a mode of transport.”

‘Panic at the palace’
However, the choice allegedly raised security concerns due to a prior incident involving the same vehicle.
Myers explained: “This prompted panic at the palace, who feared that an alternative vehicle might be necessary: in December 2010, vandals had splattered the car with white paint and smashed a rear window as [King] Charles and [Queen] Camilla were heading to the Royal Variety Performance.”
Following the attack, the Metropolitan Police conducted an immediate review, issuing additional briefings to officers and urging vigilance against potential protests.

Despite those concerns, the wedding day itself proceeded without incident. Catherine arrived at Westminster Abbey accompanied by her father, Michael Middleton. She appeared composed as she stepped from the vehicle before the ceremony.
Fifteen years on, the moment stands as a reminder of how even small departures from royal tradition can draw scrutiny, while ultimately passing without disruption on a day of national significance.
