King Charles says 'I won't see the long-distant future' in poignant speech

King Charles has given a speech in New York as he continues his state visit in the United States.

The king arrived in America on Monday alongside his wife, Queen Camilla. They were welcomed by the US President Donald Trump and his wife, US First Lady Melania.

After their visit to Washington, the couple moved on to New York. Here, King Charles spoke at Christie’s auction house during a Greater Together event.

The king, 77, spoke about the future and admitted he “won’t see the long-distance future”.

King Charles, who has bravely battled cancer after a diagnosis in 2024, was joined by a string of celebrities including Lionel Richie, Anna Wintour and Stella McCartney.

Singer Lionel Richie, a King’s Trust Global Ambassador, introduced Charles to the stage. He said the evening was an opportunity to celebrate the King’s Trust and the “enduring bond” between the UK and US.

The king added: “Which of course is a relationship rooted in shared creativity, enterprise and values reminding us we are truly greater together, that’s the point.

“Its a wonderfully and proud but extraordinary moment to think its 50 years since I started this Trust. Quite difficult to get it off the ground but we did.”

He continued: “As we look to the future, I won’t see the long-distance future, but I’m enormously grateful to you for what you can all do as supporters to help in this vital endeavour to champion the next generation ensuring that their talent and ambition continue to strengthen our society for many years to come.”

King Charles speaking before US Congress

It comes days after King Charles make a historic move and spoke before US Congress in Washington.

He followed in his mother’s footsteps after Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to do so in 1991.

Meanwhile, King Charles later gave another speech during a state dinner at the White House. President Trump and First Lady Melania hosted the king and queen for a banquet.

In his speech, the king said: “The story of Britain and America is one of reconciliation, from adversaries to the closest of allies; not always perhaps, following the straightest path.

“As you said yourself Mr President, during your own state visit at Windsor Castle last year, ours is an unbreakable bond of history and heritage, culture and commerce, industry and invention and we are determined to face the future together.

He added: “Tonight, we are here to renew an indispensable alliance which has long been a cornerstone of prosperity and security for both British and American citizens.”
