In a sweet Instagram video filmed at Australia Zoo, Robert sat beside the joey and her mother while announcing the royal connection.
The conservationist explained that “Cwtch” means “cuddle” in Welsh, making it “the absolute perfect name” for the young kangaroo, who still spends much of her time snuggled in her mother’s pouch.
Robert also gave a special shout-out to George, Charlotte and Louis for helping pick the name.
“I want to say a particular thank-you to Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte for your help in finding this little one a brilliant name,” Robert gushed.
In a separate statement, Robert reaffirmed that he “absolutely” loved the name and felt it suited the joey perfectly. “I am so thankful to have received special assistance from Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis with the naming.”
He added that little Cwtch was already “stealing hearts” and said he hoped she would inspire people to “fall in love with wildlife” and help protect animals.

Prince William and Robert Irwin’s friendship
Robert has developed a strong friendship with Prince William through the Earthshot Prize, where he serves as an ambassador.
The wildlife expert previously described William as a “true environmental hero” and praised the prince for creating an inspiring legacy for future generations.
Speaking about their bond, Robert said the pair share an “incredible synergy” when it comes to conservation work.
“He’s just a great guy,” Robert gushed to Us Weekly. “When you have a conversation with him, he’s the most lovely, intelligent person to talk to and is just so easy-going, so much fun. And I love working with him. He’s a really, really, really good guy.”
The friendship between the Wales family and Robert has continued to grow in recent years.
Prince William even recorded a surprise video message supporting Robert during his appearance on Dancing with the Stars.
“We are missing you, Robert. Whilst your ‘twinkle toes’ are going off elsewhere, I need you down here,” the Prince of Wales quipped in the pre-recorded message.
“Witney, you need to get him in as much glitter as you can. You guys have got a seriously good chance of winning it.”
After Robert went on to win the competition, William and Princess Kate publicly congratulated him online.
“Congratulations, Robert and Witney!” The couple wrote on social media.
