Tensions between Prince William and Prince Harry have captivated the public for years, and according to one royal expert, cracks were already showing just hours before one of their most high-profile moments: Harry and Meghan Markle’s 2018 wedding.

In Channel 5’s new documentary, Prince William: A Life in Pictures, royal commentator Charlotte Griffiths claims that the late Queen Elizabeth II had to step in after William allegedly expressed serious doubts about his younger brother’s relationship, and initially declined to attend a key pre-wedding event.

Queen Elizabeth II ‘intervened’ in Prince William and Prince Harry disagreement

“The fact is, William had been doubtful about the relationship and how fast it had moved, and had expressed that doubt, and it had caused much friction between the brothers,” Charlotte explains, as reported by The Mirror.

She adds: “To the point that the night before the wedding, William actually declined to go to the usher’s dinner. In the end, the Queen intervened, and he agreed to go.”

The alleged incident sheds new light on just how fractured the brothers’ relationship had already become by May 2018, despite the smiles seen on camera at Windsor Castle the next day.

Millions around the world tuned in to watch Harry and Meghan tie the knot in a star-studded ceremony at St George’s Chapel.

Both William and Queen Elizabeth II were present and appeared supportive. But behind the scenes, it seems family tensions may have already been simmering.

Newsweek’s Chief Royal Correspondent Jack Royston reflected on one widely shared image from the wedding day: a beaming photo of the two brothers inside the chapel.

He called it “probably the last time they shared a purely happy moment together”.

Prince William and Prince Harry’s ‘rift’

In the years since, the reported rift between the brothers has only deepened, culminating in Harry’s explosive 2023 memoir Spare, which recounted a series of emotional and physical altercations between the two.

One of the most shocking allegations came when Harry claimed that a confrontation in 2019 escalated after William allegedly called Meghan “difficult,” “rude,” and “abrasive”.

“It all happened so fast. So very fast,” Harry wrote. “He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor.

“I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out.”

While the brothers have appeared together publicly for a few royal events in the years since, insiders say their relationship remains deeply strained.

Prince William views reconciliation as ‘grave mistake’

Over the past few months, Prince Harry has reportedly been trying to mend fences with the royal family. But Prince William reportedly isn’t convinced.

According to the Daily Mail, Harry recently offered to share his engagement schedule with Buckingham Palace to avoid clashing with royal events and ease tensions with King Charles, who is undergoing cancer treatment.

While some see the move as a step toward reconciliation, royal expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital that it appears “desperate” from Harry.

King Charles reportedly remains wary of leaks, and Prince William is said to view the attempt as a “grave mistake”.

The Daily Mail also reported that Harry’s team met with the king’s aide on July 9, a meeting that reportedly caught William and Kate off guard, as they weren’t informed or invited to participate.

“They will be treating the talks with extreme caution,” a source claimed. “The fact that it ended up in the newspapers tells you all you need to know.”
