A recent documentary paying tribute to the life of Queen Elizabeth II shed light on the moment the royal family chose to let cameras in on palace life.

‘Haunting’ documentary decision that has ‘plagued’ the royal family
The documentary following Queen Elizabeth II’s life entitled Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century, discussed just how much of a milestone this was.
Several well known TV personalities chimed in on the topic, including Gyles Brandreth and David Attenborough.
Gyles Brandreth discussed how Queen Elizabeth II’s choice to allow cameras in to Buckingham Palace drastically changed how the royal family are portrayed and how their story is consumed by the public.
Gyles described the first documentary that depicted Queen Elizabeth’s royal life behind the scenes as seeming to “try too hard”.
He believes it caused a major shift. In fact, Gyles claims this decision has gone on to plague the royal family.

He said during the programme: “That was the beginning of them being seen as celebrities and that sewed the seeds that in later years, would come back to haunt them.”

Gyles also shared that he believed that the royal family had “shown too much”.
Famed documentarian David Attenborough was also said to have agreed, stating that the queen had “stepped away from the formal role” and was “trying too hard to show that they were just normal people”.
He went on to say: “The Royal Family is the Royal Family, they’re not like other families.”
This was said to have blurred the lines between their status as the royal family and celebrities.
Queen Camilla’s perspective
Meanwhile, Queen Camilla also shared her perspective on her mother-in-law and her 70-year reign.
“I think duty has overridden everything. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody have a sense of duty like she had,” she described.
Elsewhere, on Tuesday, members of the monarchy stepped out to attend a reception in honour of Queen Elizabeth II. April 21 marked what would have been the late monarch’s 100th birthday.

King Charles and Queen Camilla hosted a reception in honour of the occasion.
Guests included representatives of the late queen’s former charities and patronages.
Other very special centenarians were also in attendance.
Senior royals including the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh also stepped out for the occasion.
