Catherine, Princess of Wales, is set to receive a new honour on her trip to Italy this week.

The Princess of Wales, 44, will visit Italy from May 13 to 14. It’ll be Kate’s first official foreign visit in more than three years and will be centred on early childhood development.

But during the trip, she’ll also receive Reggio Emilia’s highest honour, the “Primo Tricolore”.

Princess of Wales set to receive big honour in Italy

According to HELLO!, the Princess of Wales will receive the “Primo Tricolore” in recognition of her Early Years work.

Kate will reportedly be given the green, white and red flag that inspired modern-day Italy’s national symbol during her visit. The Italian flag was first created in Reggio Emilia in 1797.

The city’s Mayor, Marco Massari, told a council session: “We consider this visit truly prestigious because it highlights one of the experiences that make our city a model known and appreciated worldwide.

“We are convinced that the visit of a woman who uses her popularity as a vehicle for spreading educational approaches in harmony with the Reggio Approach is of great importance.”

Why is Kate visiting Italy?

The upcoming visit will see the princess travel alone in her role with The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.

It’s a project she launched to advance understanding of the importance of early development.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson said: “The princess is very much looking forward to visiting Italy next week and seeing first-hand how the Reggio Emilia approach creates environments where nature and loving human relationships come together to support children’s development.

We consider this visit truly prestigious because it highlights one of the experiences that make our city a model known and appreciated worldwide.

“As the Centre for Early Childhood continues to build its work internationally, this visit is an opportunity to connect the Shaping Us Framework with leading global approaches, and to highlight a shared understanding, that it is in these early years, through the natural world and the warmth of human connection, that we begin to lay the foundations for a resilient and healthy future.”

Catherine has not undertaken a formal overseas tour since December 2022, when she joined the Prince of Wales at the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony.

In early 2024, the Princess of Wales announced she had been diagnosed with cancer. She then underwent treatment. In January last year, Kate shared that she was in remission.
